ash Hammerstein is a songwriter and film composer known for crafting scores that blend a modern production ethos with the ramshackle melodicism of idiosyncratic artists like Moondog and Brian Eno. His work has premiered at Sundance, Tribeca Film Festival and DOC NYC, and he has scored projects for Netflix, Hulu, HBO, PBS and many more.
In addition, he has released ten studio albums of Kinks-inflected folk pop and neo-classical music, which has been licensed for international commercial campaigns by brands including Adidas and Toyota.
In recent years, he's gotten more involved in NYC's theatre scene, writing and consulting on a number of musicals in development. His latest album is the self-titled Dash Hammerstein, an eleven-track chamber folk collection which came out of a period of newfound creative sobriety and experimentation.
He shares, "Dash Hammerstein is my tenth full length album but the only one with my name in the title. Fueled by the plaintive and droll lyricism of folk songwriters like Bill Callahan and John Prine, along with the humor of musical greats like Frank Loesser, the album puts honesty before all else.
The music is simple, each song crafted to work on multiple levels - living comfortably in the background of a small dinner party, and revealing depth on repeated and focused listens. But for a few friendly guest appearances on strings, horns, woodwinds, each track was written, performed and mixed by me.
The result is a collection of deeply personal chamber folk that I hope will resonate with those who spend time with it."
