On the 2nd of April Blaudzun releases his new single ‘Real Hero’. The song is an ode to the lust for life and to the everyday heroes that make our lives a bit more beautiful and worthwhile. In the video we see a young man, who is dancing and frolicking through a big city.
He's a superhero in disguise. Everywhere he passes, he changes people's eyes and minds. By means of his dancing and the pistol gesture that he makes with his hands and with which he fires kisses at passers-by. In all reflections (buildings, bus shelters, mirrors, shop windows) the viewer continually sees the reflection of the young man in a superhero suit. The final encounter with a despondent and gloomy passerby ends in a 'Mexican stand-off' with a special ending.
On the 2nd of April Blaudzun releases his new single ‘Real Hero’. The song is an ode to the lust for life and to the everyday heroes that make our lives a bit more beautiful and worthwhile. At the same time, ‘Real Hero’ is a very personal song for Blaudzun: “I wrote the song with the severely ill son of one of my best friends in mind. It has become a tribute to him, to his sister and his parents. At the time I wrote ‘Real Hero’ we were still hopeful that he would overcome the disease, but sadly things turned out differently. Last November, I sang a stripped-down version of the song at his funeral.”
‘Real Hero’ was literally created in a matter of minutes: “As if I were just plucking the lyrics and melody out of the blue and only having to record it. Every now and then something like that happens, these are very special moments for a songwriter.” The song was recorded with co-producer and mixer Tijs van de Klugt and will be featured on Blaudzun’s upcoming album.
Despite the sad reason, I think the Real Hero radiates positivity. The energy of the guitars and synths, the melody line of the chorus and the lyrics all contribute to this. As the world seemed to be inundated with hatred and disease last year, I still found there was a lot of beauty to discover in the chaos. People who know how to find each other when opposites seem unbridgeable, people who discover love in times of pandemic. People who do not resign themselves to loss and loneliness and who stand for themselves and their fellow man. Those are my true heroes.”
