Ken Burgan Unveils Somewhere Else

After more than 70 years in music, Ken Burgan returns with Somewhere Else, a new album that reflects a lifetime of songwriting and musical exploration.

From playing saxophone in Frank Zappa's early band, The Boogie Men, to building a respected career as a songwriter, Burgan has remained a unique voice in American music. Produced by his son Hunter Burgan (AFI), Somewhere Else blends rock, jazz, and poetic influences into a thoughtful and timeless collection.

More than a late-career release, Somewhere Else is proof that creativity continues to evolve at any age.

en Burgan has been playing music since the inception of rock and roll in the 1950s. Now more than seven decades later, his new album reflects the music he has absorbed and the life he has lived.

Raised in greater Los Angeles, Burgan spent his high school years playing saxophone in Frank Zappa’s early band, The Boogie Men. By the early 1960s he was a fixture in the L.A. circuit, performing in bands like The Imposters and The Red Roosters who also backed touring R&B legends including The Coasters, The Olympics, and The Shirelles. In the late 1960s he fronted several soul groups including Montana Mule and Rock of Ajax.

In the 1970s, Burgan’s focus shifted to songwriting and he found a signature style that blended wit, melancholy, and a slightly off-center view of the world. He landed a deal with Blue Thumb Records and in 1974 released his debut album, The Big Bow Wow Strain. 

Around the same time, his composition “Sweetheart (Waitress in a Donut Shop)” was recorded by Dan Hicks. It was later recorded by Maria Muldaur, and eventually covered by more than a dozen artists, cementing Burgan’s place as an adept songwriter. Burgan jumped back into the studio and quickly recorded a follow-up album but Blue Thumb Records changed ownership and unfortunately the album was never released.

Burgan soldiered on through the 1980s and 1990s, performing and collaborating with longtime friend John Girton in groups like The Pointless Sisters and The Meisters. He also continued to evolve his eclectic style of songwriting, blending wry lyricism with unexpected arrangements. Burgan’s independently released albums, Moonbang in 1998 and Real Reality in 2005 have been compared to Joe Jackson and Roxy Music.

Now in his 80s, Burgan returns with Somewhere Else, a new album that feels more like a distillation than a late-career coda. Produced by his son, Hunter Burgan bassist for AFI, who also handles drums and bass on the album, this new record bridges generations while staying rooted in Burgan’s singular sensibility. 

Somewhere Else draws inspiration from such varied sources as John Coltrane, T.S. Eliot, Camille Paglia, and Johnny Cash. Burgan describes these influences as a “powerful placebo against existential stresses,” a sentiment that comes through clearly in his new work. Somewhere Else is the expression of a lifetime steeped in rock and roll; living, listening, absorbing, and finally letting it all spill out. Much like Burgan, Somewhere Else is restless, reflective, adventurous and still very much alive.
