Political design, news related cartoons, spoken word and music; they are all connected in the new cross-over project We...are Doomed (Pragmatic Propaganda). The new book, full of sociopolitical cartoons by illustrator TRIK, is also the third studio album by the inimitable band The Irrational Library. In order to really bring the deeper meaning of ‘Pragmatic Propaganda’ to life, TRIK’s edgy graphic work has been combined in words and visuals with frontman Joshua Baumgarten’s lyrics, and vice versa. This truly is cartoon activism meets spokensoulpunkrock’n’roll.
“Trump was the muse” • TRIK
“More like the fuse” • Joshua Baumgarten
Quick one-two’s like the one above have allowed visual artist TRIK and The Irrational Library-frontman Joshua Baumgarten to lift each other’s work to new heights. Put the record on, immerse yourself in the book and let yourself be bombarded by what follows. If you want to know where we as a society stand right now, this is the document of the times that you are looking for.
Next to the album and book, We… Are Doomed will travel as propaganda tour with live performances and exposition. Here, TRIK’s work will confront and connect with The Irrational Library’s music in a full-scale live performance covering all the bases. Come get some!
Joshua Baumgarten & The Irrational Library
The Irrational Library is a Haarlem based rock band with its roots firmly planted in both the regional and international counterculture. The Dutch-American band produces a raw, dirty groove which is heavily influenced by icons of beat-, provo- and punk culture. The band’s rhythm section - Misha Zeera on bass and Lars van der Weijden on drums- puts the poetry packed with social criticism on a musical freight train with the velocity of acts such as The Minutemen or Gil Scott Heron. Tom de Haan's baritone sax then propels this freight train ever onward with tight melodies and psychedelic improvisations.
The "unofficial city poet of Haarlemtown" Joshua Baumgarten is the catalyst that propels The Irrational Library forward on the rhythm and rhyme of his socio-politically engaged spoken word poetry. Known to many as Mr.Weird Beard a.k.a. the Beat Rabbi or the Godfather of the Haarlemtown Underground has been organizing alternative music events, poetry readings and mini-festivals in Haarlem for the last 20 years. A prominent man with something unique to say, who has become in the last decade a well-known element in what is happening in the local as well as national and international alternative music and poetry scene.
