Dotsun Moon ○ Moments In The Sun

  From CANADA

Upstate New York-based artist Dotsun Moon presents 'Moments In The Sun', a melancholic yet hopeful anthem for troubled times. This song spotlights this artist's third album 'Tiger', inspired by the music that motivated him to write music and paying homage to pioneers of the early post-punk and new wave scene.

Echoing the sentiment of friends navigating an overwhelming world, the song opens with an evocative guitar line that perfectly captures the essence of classic indie and dreampop before blossoming into an intertwining dance between synth and guitar leads. The lyrics delve into the importance of holding onto cherished experiences and seeking human connection, offering a soothing balm for a weary mind.

In the lead-up to the album, Dotsun Moon released the lush and gazey singles 'Save Us' and 'Never Had a Heart' on the trail of the earlier invigorating singles 'Bring Love' and 'Give Up The Tears'.

Based in Buffalo, Dotsun Moon is the creative wellspring from which Richard Flierl's musical visions flow, transforming his artistic inspirations into tangible form. Seeing several incarnations since releasing their debut album 4 A.M. in 2011, the trajectory remains steadfast on a path of dreamy rock offerings over the years, with multi-instrumentalist Flierl also gradually assuming vocal duties.

"Reaching out to a friend to find the good in the world with a synth and guitar playing intertwining leads. The opening guitar line before the song kicks in recalls the simple guitar lines of The Clean and The Chills, especially 'Pink Frost', without copying those bands," says Richard Flierl. "I see friends on social media reaching out to make sense of the world, dealing with difficult issues and being overwhelmed. It is a lofty goal, but sometimes a melancholy song of hope can soothe the troubled mind."

Conveying his bold and self-contained vision, 'Tiger' is a departure from previous work, which involved female vocals.  Evoking both euphoria and a poignant sense of grounding, Dotsun Moon brings you this compelling and unique exploration. Engineered and mastered by Doug White at Watchmen Studios in Lockport, NY, Richard Flierl and Doug White mixed the album on location.

'Never Had A Heart' kicks off the album with a propulsive, Hook-esque bassline and Daniel Ash-inspired guitar, leading into vocals that evoke New Order or Love and Rockets. 'Bring Love' follows as an upbeat, John Hughes-esque anthem of hopeful reconciliation, featuring angelic synths and a yearning guitar riff. 'Save Us' delivers an urgent plea, blending an M83-like power intro with the album's core bass and guitar influences. 'Piano Trailer Melody 4' is a reverent homage to Harold Budd, showcasing rich chords influenced by his collaborations with Guthrie and Foxx.

'Moments In The Sun' provides melancholic hope, with intertwining synth and guitar recalling The Clean/The Chills.

'Army of Me' navigates overcoming adversity, starting with a piano riff hinting at Erik Satie before bursting into David Gilmour/Will Sergeant-esque guitar bends. 'Give Up The Tears' offers anthemic hope, a perfect summer driving song propelled by synths and Will Sergeant-influenced guitar. 'Moments In The Sun' provides melancholic hope, with intertwining synth and guitar recalling The Clean/The Chills. Finally, 'Winter Streets' captures the spirit of a harsh Buffalo winter, evolving from quiet sounds to a burst of energy that embodies resilience against "cabin fever."

Over the years, Dotsun Moon has performed with such notable artists as Mary Ognibene (The Lovely Intangibles) and Buffalo Music Hall of Famer Maria Sebastian, having also played shows with Joywave, Vanishing Kids and The Lost Patrol, not to mention Pride Festival.

The 'Tiger' album is out now, available from fine music platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp.

"Beguiling and breathtaking... diverse and divine" ~ The Big Takeover Magazine

"Lush, expressive, and glittering... allowing the pain of absence and the hope of peace to exist alongside one another" ~ Skylight Webzine

"A defiant throwback to the late 80s / early 90s, working a swirling guitar part that presents itself like something modelled on My Bloody Valentine, but with some actual melody applied" ~ Real Gone

"Erupts upon ears with a sonic shimmer as a sonorous ambience... another beacon in the cloudy cacophony, yet it all unites for a magnetic romance in word and breath" ~ The Ringmaster Review
