nticipating Nilza Costa new album Cantigas, EXU is a refreshing, cheering song, with the sweet Nilza's vocals dancing on a tapestry of acoustic instruments. 

Exu is a primordial Orisha in Candomblé, the messenger between the spiritual and physical worlds, and the embodiment of movement and the crossroads of life choices.

The Cantigas, or Orin, are sacred songs passed down through African languages, in this album Yoruba, Kimbundu and also Brazilian Portuguese which is heavily influenced by the African cultures brought by the enslaved men and women.

These chants serve as a direct channel of communication with the Orixás (or Orisha), the deities originating from the Yoruba tradition and found in Afro-Brazilian as well as Afro-Cuban religious syncretistic rituals, such as Candomblé (Brazil), the Santería (Cuba) and the Voodoo (Haiti).

They act as intermediaries between the supreme being Olorun and human beings.

SINGLE 

Each song is an intense expression of faith, capable of evoking the elements of nature and humanity, telling stories of struggle, resilience and the dignity of Black People throughout the diaspora.

Nilza Costa’s voice has long given life to the revolution of a people who, through music and spirituality, have reclaimed their path toward emancipation. Her songs tell the stories of men and women torn from their homeland — narratives filled with both melancholy and hope.

The Cantigas are also an art of encounter: an invitation to welcome, respect and share.

In this album, they come alive with renewed energy, transforming into a musical journey that blends spirituality, tradition and contemporary expression.

Each track is dedicated to a specific Orisha:

Ramunha is a traditional song and dance of the Jeje Nation (Benin and Togo), brought to Brazil by ancestors who, after the conflicts in Africa, sought unity and non-violence in their new homeland.

Exu is a primordial Orisha in Candomblé, the messenger between the spiritual and physical worlds, and the embodiment of movement and the crossroads of life choices.

Ogum is the quintessential warrior Orisha, protecting devotees in their daily battles against life’s adversities. Ogum is also associated with hard work, hunting and agriculture, as the patron of manual laborers.

Logunéde is the Orisha of progress, beauty, wealth and war. The child of Oxum and Oxóssi, his name “Logun Edé” means “great warrior of the city of Edé.”

Obaluaye is the Orixá who governs disease, healing and regeneration. Associated with the earth and with time, he is known as the “Lord of the Earth.”

Oxumaré is an Orisha linked to duality and the fluidity of existence. He represents the union of masculine and feminine, life and death, and the continuity of all things.

Nanã embodies ancestry, wisdom and transformation. She is the Orisha of mud, still waters and marshes, symbolizing the cycles of life and death.

Lemanjá (Yemanjá) is the Great Mother, the Orisha of the waters and universal maternity. She symbolizes ancestry and carries a message of unity, respect and equality among peoples, reminding all that they are her children.

Oxum is the female Orisha of fresh waters, associated with wealth, love, beauty and fertility. Known as the “Lady of Gold,” she is the protector of financial well-being and romantic unions.
