Rachael Sage & The Sequins Pay Tribute to Buddy Holly

Rachael Sage & The Sequins revisit Buddy Holly’s timeless classic “Everyday” with a fresh and heartfelt Everyday maxi-single. The release features three distinct arrangements: an intimate acoustic version, a chamber-inspired take with piano and strings, and a full-band rendition.

For Sage, the song is deeply personal. Inspired by The Buddy Holly Story as a child, she considers “Everyday” one of her favorite pop songs and credits it with inspiring her own journey as a songwriter. Her interpretation brings a warm, playful energy to Holly’s deceptively simple melody, while reflecting her own appreciation for life and resilience.

The project features acclaimed musicians including cellist Dave Eggar, violinist Kelly Halloran and guitarist Christie Lenée. All proceeds from the release will benefit the Buddy Holly Educational Foundation.

A joyful tribute to a legendary songwriter, Everyday also offers a glimpse into Sage’s forthcoming album Under My Canopy.

nnovative alt-folk-pop band Rachael Sage & The Sequins have released "Everyday (Acoustic)," an exuberant version of Buddy Holly's iconic "Everyday," on their new Everyday maxi-single. A playful refresh of Holly's classic, the song is a catchy original take featuring finger cymbals, claps, violin, cello, and an acoustic guitar contribution from Christie Lenée.

With its rich variety of performances, the Maxi-Single also includes two other arrangements of the song: a chamber version featuring piano and strings, as well as a full band version. All Proceeds will go to the Buddy Holly Educational Foundation.

For Sage, who has performed frequently at The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation’s SXSW Kickoff l Benefit Party in Austin, the song is equally reverential and highly personal. It left a singular impression on her after watching “The Buddy Holly Story” film biopic at a young age.

Having stated that the song made her want to become a songwriter, to Sage – who is a cancer survivor – the deceptively simple, universal lyrics and gorgeous melody reflect an appreciation for living every day boldly and with love.

  • Rachael Sage on Her Deep Connection to Buddy Holly’s “Everyday”

Rachael discusses the song, saying: “I’ve always wanted to do a cover of Buddy Holly’s ‘Everyday’, because it’s probably my very favorite pop song ever. My Dad and I went to see ‘The Buddy Holly Story’ in the movie theatre when I was a kid, and his story and music impacted me enormously from then on.

A few years back, I was invited to perform this song at a Buddy Holly Foundation event at SXSW in Austin, so after that The Sequins had an arrangement featuring cello and violin in our repertoire and I just felt ready to include it – two versions actually! – on this album. For me as a vocalist, this song demands that I exist in pure love for the duration I’m singing it, and it’s deceptively simple.

  • Rachael Sage Celebrates the Enduring Legacy of Buddy Holly

If someday I could write even one song with this much beauty and universality…well, let’s just say it reminds me of the power of music to move every fiber of my being. So much so that I felt compelled to record it with two entirely different arrangements, once we got into the studio!

Whether I’m playing it on Wurlitzer or piano, the melody is a reminder for me of just how precious Buddy Holly’s legacy is, and how much potential artistry the world lost with his sudden passing. I hope I’ve honored him just a little bit!”

A joyful tribute to Buddy Holly, the Everyday maxi-single was produced by Sage with Grammy® nominee Mikhail Pivovarov and features Sage on lead and background vocals, Wurlitzer, lap percussion, glockenspiel, & finger cymbals; violinist Kelly Halloran (Goo Goo Dolls); Grammy® nominated cellist Dave Eggar; and the extraordinary Christie Lenée on acoustic guitar.
